Jung Bahadur Rana (1817โ€“1877) was a powerful statesman and the founder of the Rana dynasty in Nepal. Born as Lamichhane in Bhadgaon (Bhaktapur), he rose through the ranks of the Nepalese military and court to become Prime Minister and de facto ruler of Nepal after the Kot Massacre of 1846, a violent event that eliminated his rivals and consolidated his power.

Jung Bahadur Rana is known for modernizing Nepalโ€™s administration, legal system, and army. He traveled abroad to India and Europe, notably visiting Britain, which helped establish diplomatic ties and introduced modern ideas to Nepal. Under his rule, the hereditary Rana system was established, giving his family political control for over a century.

Despite his authoritarian rule, he brought stability to Nepal and initiated reforms that shaped the countryโ€™s governance. His life remains a significant chapter in Nepalese history, illustrating both ambition and political acumen.
