About This Book
The Hungry Stones is a famous supernatural short story by Rabindranath Tagore, originally written in Bengali. The story is set in a remote palace along the riverbank, which is rumored to be haunted by the spirits of its past inhabitants.

The narrative follows a government official who stays overnight in the abandoned palace. He becomes captivated by the palaceโ€™s eerie beauty and the mysterious aura surrounding it. As night falls, he begins to experience strange visions, hearing whispers and sensing ghostly presences that seem to replay the palaceโ€™s past. The line between reality and the supernatural gradually blurs, creating a tense, suspenseful atmosphere.

The Hungry Stones explores themes of obsession, memory, and the lingering presence of history. Tagoreโ€™s poetic language and psychological depth make it a compelling example of Indian supernatural fiction, blending horror with cultural and historical resonance, and it remains a classic in Indian literature.
