Godaan

Munshi Premchand (1880–1936) was one of the most celebrated authors of modern Hindi and Urdu literature. Born as Dhanpat Rai Srivastava in Lamhi, near Varanasi, he adopted the pen name “Premchand” and became renowned for his realistic fiction that depicted the social, economic, and moral issues of rural India.

Premchand wrote novels, short stories, and plays that explored themes such as poverty, social injustice, caste discrimination, and the struggles of ordinary people. His notable works include Godaan, Karmbhoomi, and Gaban, which highlight the ethical dilemmas and hardships of Indian society.

Known for his simple and expressive language, Premchand’s storytelling combined realism with deep empathy for his characters. His works not only entertained readers but also prompted social awareness and reform. Today, he is remembered as a pioneer of social realism in Indian literature, whose writings continue to influence writers and readers worldwide.
