Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre is a classic novel by Charlotte Brontë, first published in 1847. The story follows Jane, an orphan who suffers a harsh childhood at Gateshead and Lowood School. Despite cruelty and hardship, she grows into a strong, intelligent, and independent young woman.

Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets the mysterious and brooding Mr. Rochester. As their relationship deepens, Jane discovers a dark secret hidden within the house—Rochester’s wife, Bertha Mason, who is kept locked away due to mental illness. Shocked and heartbroken, Jane refuses to sacrifice her principles and leaves Thornfield, choosing self-respect over passion.

After facing poverty and uncertainty, Jane unexpectedly inherits money from a relative, gaining financial independence. When she learns that Thornfield has burned down and Rochester has been injured and blinded, she returns to him. Now equals in status and strength, they reunite and marry.

The novel explores themes of love, morality, social class, and female independence, making it one of the most enduring works of English literature.
